I’ve admittedly never been a fan, but this is horrible, dispiriting news.

The story is breaking that John Edwards is suspending his campaign due to a recurrence of his wife’s cancer. This is a good moment to remember that there are real people made of flesh behind even the most public figures, and to wish Elizabeth Edwards a complete and speedy recovery.

Best wishes also go out to her husband. Serious illness is often tougher on the spouse than it is on the person who is actually sick. I know this for a fact. With two young children, John Edwards currently has all the burdens any man could shoulder.

UPDATE: The campaign will go on.  So will Elizabeth's fight.  Godspeed to them all.
