The first piece that got me noticed in the blogosphere was a mini-magnum opus titled “The Kerry Brain.” In it, I suggested that John Kerry by all rights should have gone to Harvard Law School. After all, he graduated Yale and served nobly in Vietnam to further buttress his résumé. But he didn’t go to Harvard Law – he went to Boston College Law School. I surmised that the explanation for Kerry attending B.C. could only be that he proved himself such a dunderhead at Yale that the admission’s office at Harvard Law had serious qualms about whether he could handle the work there. I even speculated that Kerry’s performance at Yale was probably so dreadful, one could accurately describe it as sub-Bushian.
Kaus linked, Reynolds linked, and I was on the map. And oh the angry email I got from Kerry supporters. They refused to believe that their champion was dumber than Bush. After all, as a candidate Kerry made a point of boasting how he studied at college while Bush merely partied. If Kerry still got worse grades, what would that say?
Additionally, many people pointed to a Washington Post story where Kerry claimed he didn’t go to Harvard Law because he got his application in late. Now, I had some experience with this kind of excuse. Similar to my beloved Senator, I managed to use a high level Ivy League college as a steppingstone to a comparably mediocre law school. I went to Harvard undergrad, and then the Boston University School of Law. No disrespect to my beloved law school alma mater intended; it has produced such noteworthy grads as F. Lee Bailey, Rob Berger, Kirsten Beske and Markos Moulitsas.
Nearly every Ivy League grad at B.U. League had some cockamamie story about why they were there instead of Harvard or Michigan or Stanford. A lot of them sounded a lot like Kerry’s lame excuse. Regarding Kerry’s reason for not attending Harvard Law, I knew shinola when I smelled it.
MY VINDICATION CAME IN TWO PARTS. A couple of years ago, Kerry’s undergrad transcript leaked out and he registered an astonishing 4 D’s in his freshman year. His cumulative Grade Point Average was indeed sub-Bushian.
And then, just yesterday, the latest issue of 02138 magazine hit the newsstands (but not the internet, hence no link). The cover story is on noteworthy people Harvard rejected. It reports regarding one John Kerry:
Already a Massachusetts senator, foiled Democratic presidential aspirant, and trophy husband, John Kerry adds "Crimson-challenged" to his list of burdens. "Rejected," he says, "is such a strong word." The son of a Harvard-educated diplomat, Kerry was turned away by Harvard College in 1962. He eventually brushed himself off and earned a political science degree from Yale, along with membership in the elite secret society Skull and Bones. That was followed by a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts in Vietnam. Still Kerry wasn't good enough for Harvard. In 1973, Harvard Law School rejected him, and he was forced to earn his J.D. at Boston College instead. Despite Harvard's rejections, Kerry went on to serve four (so far) terms in the U.S. Senate, date Morgan Fairchild, and marry a billionaire, Teresa Heinz. Not getting into Harvard, Kerry jokes, may have been for the best. "I never would have fit in at a total jock school."
Hmmm. Candidate Kerry lied to us about something so meaningless as a decades-old law school application. How could he be so vain and insecure? I’m shocked!
