Are we headed for disaster in Virginia? If Mark Warner runs, Rasmussen seems to say so:

Gilmore (R) 34
Warner (D) 54

Davis (R) 30
Warner (D) 57

Not polled is Congressman Eric Cantor, who has not ruled out a bid. I don't know if Cantor's numbers would be much better just yet, but I do know that Cantor would be absolutely relentless against Warner. He's the toughest campaigner by far in the field, and the best hope for Republicans in the Old Dominion. He would not shy from cutting up Warner or any Democratic opponent.

Warner is set to announce his intentions on Wednesday. He could run for the Senate, or for Governor in 2009, or he could reprise last year's mysterious decision last year not to run for President after he ramping up for a race more than any other Democrat.

To recall just how strange and unexpected Warner's decision was, imagine Mitt Romney deciding not to run at the 11th hour. That's how weird it was...
