Deval Patrick responds to his recent slew of missteps and borderline abuses of power, saying:
“Don't give up on me, because I don't intend to give up on the people of Massachusetts."
That’s awfully big of him, after the way the people of Massachusetts used tax-payer funds to lease Cadillacs, decorate their offices, take State Troop helicopter rides and then topped it all off by using their political power as a private little billy-club when the urge struck.
Wait a second – the people of Massachusetts have done of none of those thing! Still, it’s good to know our mighty potentate won’t be giving up on us.
(Actually, this kind of comment heralds a new form of politics, a kind that offers high-minded sounding rhetoric that has nothing to do with nothing. Barack Obama is the master of the art – he can deliver a speech praising motherhood, baseball and apple pie and make it all sound brand new and exciting. In less gifted hands (or mouths) like Deval Patrick’s, such content-free rhetoric in response to real issues rings hollow and pathetic.)
