Because few people watch the Keith Olberman Super-Fun Power Hour on MSNBC, a few word of set-up are probably necessary here. Olberman concludes each one of his broadcasts with a salute to the person he considers to be that day’s “Worst Person in the World” (except for those very special days when he ends the festivities by gracing his “audience” with a Keith Olberman Special Comment which usually consists of him indignantly calling President Bush “Sir” for seven minutes). In case you haven’t guessed, Olberman is an unhinged lefty.

Last night’s winner of the coveted “Worst Person in the World” was Arizona Senator John Kyl. I know, you’re saying to yourself, “Huh?” Kyl is after all the rock-ribbed conservative who reached across the aisle to fashion an immigration compromise with the likes of Ted Kennedy and John McCain. Shouldn’t unhinged lefties currently adore Kyl, or at the very least loath him less than they do the rest of the Republican Party? What could Kyl have done to incur the wrath of Olberman?

Glad you asked. In making amendments to the McCain/Kennedy Spruce Goose of an immigration bill, Kyl had the audacity to listen to good ideas that came from…drum roll please…conservative radio “water carrier” Hugh Hewitt. Todd Bensman (a name that’s familiar around here, but I probably less so at MSNBC’s studios) reports in this morning San Antonio Express:

Kyl said Monday he was inspired to include language providing tougher inspection of Islamic immigrants after reading a four-part San Antonio Express-News series about special interest migrants. He also was lobbied about the newspaper's findings by constitutional law professor, author and California talk show host Hugh Hewitt.

"Frankly, it came from Hugh Hewitt, and Hugh got the idea by reading your series," Kyl said.

The May 20-23 series, titled "Breaching America," documented how thousands of immigrants were able to steal over U.S. borders since 9-11 from countries listed as state sponsors of terror, such as Syria and Iran, and from elsewhere in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia where terrorist groups operate.

Now, because I know you’re dying to see it, here’s Olberman conveying his award upon Kyl and his slam at Hugh:

You know what’s quite literally sad about this? Olberman doesn’t even think to address the substantive nature of the amendment Kyl is proposing let alone the Pulitzer-worthy Todd Bensman series that provoked it. For Olberman and his ilk, knowing that Hugh Hewitt is for something is enough to know that they should be against it.

Sadder still, guys like Olberman fancy themselves open-minded, intelligent and thoughtful.
