In anticipation of the Robert Spencer/Dinesh D’Souza throwdown which is now only two hours away (where D’Souza promises to reveal Spencer’s massive ignorance regarding Islam – heh), I thought I’d take a brief moment to run down other cage matches that are currently raging on the web.
1) Allah vs. Ahmadenijad – In a brilliant post, Allah demonstrates how Ahmadenijad is lifting his anti-Semitic riffs from everyone ranging from Adolf Hitler to Mel Gibson. As Allah mordantly concludes, Ahmadenijad is the Dane Cook of anti-Semitism. I find that an oddly encouraging sentiment.
2) Ace vs. That Chick Who Used to Blog for John Edwards – Ace thinks women cheapen themselves by rolling in the hay with every Tom, Richard and Harry. Amanda Marcotte thinks such behavior is empowering and a kick to the patriarchy’s proverbial groin. I link, you decide. (I’m not sure if this oddly lascivious post of cat-spanking that Ace posted has anything to do with the feud, but it might. Also, Ace is having a fund-raising drive. In spite of the public perception on the matter, blogging is not a particularly lucrative profession, even here at the top of the blogging pinnacle. If you’re inclined to help Ace, I’m sure he would appreciate it and write you a very funny thank you note.)
3) Arianna vs. All of Us – in a strange post, Arianna Huffington attacks right wing thugs like me for using the dirty Swiftboating tactic of accurately quoting people on her comment boards. First, we accurately quoted Amanda Marcotte, now this. Is there any depth to which we will not sink?
Arianna maintains that “a miniscule portion of the people who read that story chose to take advantage of the anonymous, open forum nature of comments in our news section to express regret that the Vice President hadn't been killed in the attack.” (I find when I read something that Arianna’s written, it’s much more fun if I hear it being read in her phony accent.) Anyway, her assertion is simply false. Michelle has the PDF to prove it. The only thing that makes Arianna’s response noteworthy is that she employs the phrases “Glenn Greenwald” and “brilliant analysis” in the same sentence. Oh my head – it hurts!
The best thing to come out of this is it has caused Bill Kristol to enter the blogosphere. Since his post is so good, I’m going quote it almost in its entirety, but I want you to follow the link anyway because quality blogging like this should make the Sitemeter jump:
Arianna disapproves of those of us who called attention to the comments posted on her site Tuesday morning lamenting the failure of a suicide bombing in Afghanistan Tuesday to kill Vice President Cheney. These commenters "make up a very, very small unrepresentative portion of our readers," she now assures us.
How does she know? If the HuffPost commenters are unrepresentative of HuffPost readers, how does she divine the views of her readers?
Enlighten us, Arianna. Poll your readers. Ask them: Are they pleased that the attempt against Vice President Cheney failed? Are they grateful that he is alive and well? Do you hope the U.S. prevails in Afghanistan? In Iraq?
Bill Kristol, you’ve been an adviser to world leaders, a magazine publisher, and now, finally, you are a blogger. My friend – at last, your résumé is complete.
